Smart . Adjustable Rear Control Arms InstallationA car enthusiast might consider lowering his vehicle to give it the appearance of a race car; however, lowering the vehicle affects the alignment of the rear control arms and contributes to tire wear. Installing adjustable rear control arms alleviates this misalignment. Function Adjustable rear control arms regulate the wheel's inclination compared to the wheel well. With proper adjustment, the wheels appear straight and even on the ground. An improper adjustment leads to the top of the wheel angling inward -- toward the wheel well. An extreme inclination produces uneven wear on the tires. Installation After securing the vehicle's rear on a car jack stand, unbolt the inner and outer mounting bolts on the arm. Install the new adjustable arm with the two bolts. Repeat the removal and installation on the other rear wheel. Remove the vehicle from the car jack and tighten the arms. Tighten and loosen the jam nuts and center piece to adjust the inclination of the arms; the wheel must sit straight in the wheel well. Considerations Take the vehicle on a road test after the final adjustments. It may be necessary to readjust the arms after driving the vehicle.
Smart . Radius Arm Bushing Installation on a 1977 Ford F-150The 1977 Ford F-150 pickup uses Ford's proprietary and patented "twin I-beam" front suspension. This suspension system uses two I-beam axles, mounted to pivots on the frame, providing independent front suspension. Coil springs and shock absorbers handle the bumps. Because this suspension does not use control arms, a radius arm mounted to each axle runs back to a cross-member, stabilizing the axles fore and aft position. The radius arms bolt to the axle and have rubber bushings at the cross-member. As with everything else made of rubber on your F-150, the rubber insulators do wear out. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Floor jack Jack stands Ratchet and socket set Wrench set Torque wrench Step by Step : 1 Park the F-150 on a level, paved surface and set the parking brake. Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels. Raise the front of the F-150 and support it with jack stands. Finish removing the front wheels 2 Position the floor jack underneath the outside of the axle on which you are working. Raise the jack until it just starts to lift the axle. Use a ratchet and socket to remove the bolt from the lower shock absorber mount. Push the shock absorber out of the mount. 3 Use a ratchet and socket to remove the two bolts from the upper spring retainer. Remove the retainer. 4 Place a wrench on the lower spring retainer nut in the bottom-center of the coil spring to hold it while you use a ratchet and socket to remove the bolt that runs through the bottom of the radius arm. Remove the bolt. Slowly, and carefully, lower the jack far enough so that you can pull out the coil spring and lower spring seat. 5 Use a ratchet and socket to remove the nut from the rear of the radius arm where it attaches to the cross-member. Remove the washer and rubber insulator. Push the axle in towards the center of the truck until the rear of the radius arm is clear of the hole in the cross-member. Remove the inside rubber bushing. Slide on a new bushing. Slide the end of the radius arm back into the cross-member while pulling it back into position on the axle. Install a new bushing on the end of the radius arm. Install the washer and nut. You will tighten the nut after everything is put back together 6 Slide the coil spring with the lower spring seat back into position. Make sure the top of the coil spring is properly positioned in the upper spring seat. You'll notice that the upper spring seat has a stop in it that the end of the coil rests against. 7 Slide the radius arm bolt through the bottom of the radius arm and into the lower spring seat. Install the lower retainer and nut on the bolt. Use a torque wrench to torque the bolt to 100 foot-pounds. 8 Install the upper spring retainer and bolts. Use a torque wrench to torque the bolts to 25 foot-pounds. Place the bottom of the shock absorber back in its mount, install and torque the bolt to 50 foot-pounds. 9 Use a torque wrench to torque the nut at the rear of the radius arm to 80 foot-pounds. Step by Step : 10 Remove the floor jack from the axle. Raise the front of the F-150, remove the jack stands and lower it to the ground. Tips & Warnings Use polyurethane replacement bushings; they last longer. *your engine is dieseling. This condition is often due to using fuel with too high an octane rating, but a tank of inferior gas or an idle speed that's set to high may also be the culprit. * If you hear rumbling noises coming from under or toward the rear of the vehicle, the trouble could be a defective exhaust pipe, muffler, or catalytic converter; or it could be coming from a worn universal joint or some other part of the drive train. Have a service facility put the car up on a hoist and find the problem. If you hear clunking under your vehicle, especially when you go over a bump, check the shock absorbers and suspension system. If it's toward the rear, your tailpipe or muffler may be loose. * If you hear a whistling noise coming from under the hood, check the hoses for vacuum leaks. If the whistling comes from inside the vehicle, there's probably a leak in the weather-stripping. Patch the weather- 924

If you hear an unlocatable sound, get an old stethoscope from a medical supply house or ask your family doctor. As shown in Figure 20-1, take off the rubber disc and insert a piece of tubing in its place (about VA inches will do). Then put the plugs in your ears, run the engine, and move the tube end of the stethoscope around the hood area. The stethoscope amplifies the sound as you near the part that's causing it. o m i ii H Smart . Crank poly timing mark?

Be careful not to get a shock or get your hair tangled in the fan. If your brakes squeal, the brake linings may be glazed or worn. Some disc brake pads have built-in wear sensors that squeal when it's time to replace them. Even though some disc brakes tend to squeal under normal circumstances, it's safer to have the brakes checked, or follow the instructions in Chapter 18 and check them yourself. Smart . Try the following: • With the engine off, check the spark plug cables for breaks or shorts in the wiring. • With the engine off, remove the spark plugs one at a time and check whether they're clean and properly gapped. Replace any that are fouled or burned. If that doesn't help, have a technician check the ignition system with an electronic engine analyzer. People used to check spark plugs by holding the end of the spark plug cable close to a metal surface to see whether a spark jumped across when the engine was cranked, but the high voltage in most ignition systems now makes that procedure extremely dangerous. If the idling is rough but even and your vehicle has a carburetor, the carburetor settings may need to be adjusted. Chapter 13 shows you how to do this yourself. If that doesn't work, you may need to replace the carburetor. Fuel-injected vehicles don't have carburetors, and a technician must check and adjust these complex electronic systems. Try checking the compression in each cylinder, following the instructions in the section of Chapter 13 called "Checking the Compression in Your Cylinders." If the engine needs to be rebuilt, you may prefer to get another engine — or another vehicle. Smart . Why do Midwestern states use ethanol in their gasoline?
